Thad Cockrell’s If In Case You Feel the Same

Album package design for THAD’s debut album If In Case You Feel the Same released on June 26, 2020. His work is categorized as indie rock, alternative rock, gospel, and alternative country.

In an interview with Magnolia Record Club THAD shared his approach to the record, “One of the things I really wanted to do with this album was make a record with people who didn’t look, think, or believe like me,” says Cockrell. “I had this idea that if we created something really special, maybe it would have some kind of ripple effect—so that when we play these songs live, the people in the audience don’t all look, think, and believe the same too. To me unity comes from diversity, not from sameness, and that’s what makes things really powerful.”

We workshopped the design closely over many rounds, exploring themes of belief, friendship, and empathy. No budget for photography led me to the collage approach, working with (mostly) Thad’s personal photographs.

I often think of the line “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are” (widely attributed to Theodore Roosevelt, he credits it, in his Autobiography, Chapter IX, to Squire Bill Widener of Widener’s Valley, Virginia)

Album cover with a mirror (mylar) sticker and bubble-gum pink vinyl.

Back and front cover collage art combines Thad’s paintings, photography, as well as photography from Bradley Cockrell.

There is also a second pressing on highlighter yellow vinyl by ATO. From the ATO website:

“Thad Cockrell released his first solo album in over a decade in the midst of the pandemic. ‘If In Case You Feel The Same’ was his debut for ATO Records and, despite modest acclaim and radio play, struggled to get off the ground. By a stroke of luck, or twist of fate, Jimmy Fallon heard the track "Swinging'" in a hardware store and invited Thad to perform on The Tonight Show with The Roots. The song rocketed to #1 on iTunes, and set off a media frenzy. New pressing on translucent yellow vinyl.”

Great story about how Jimmy Fallon discovered this album
